Hot and sour soup

Hot and Sour soup is one of my home’s favorite recipe. My daughter keep asking me to make this hot and sour soup. I obliged her request all the time as it has benefit of corn and I make it with chicken which gives her protein as well. This Hot and Sour soup is one of the healthiest soup recipe which everyone will like.

  • 1/4 cup Chicken, bolied & chopped
  • 3-4 tbsp cornflour/ corn starch 
  • 1 onion chopped 
  • 4 -5 cloves garlic finely chopped
  • 1 inch piece Ginger chopped 
  • 1/2 (medium) finely chopped carrot
  • 1 small cabbage finely chopped
  • 1 green capsicum finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp White pepper 
  • Salt as per taste
  • 1/4 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp MSG ( optional )
  • 2 -3 tbsp Soya sauce
  • 2 tbsp green chilli sauce
  • Chicken stock 4-5 cups / water
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp vinegar
  • 1-2 green chillies chopped
  • 1 chopped Spring onions with greens
  • salt
  • vegetable oil


  • 2-3 tbsp soya sauce
  • 1-2 tbsp vinegar
  • 1/8 tsp pepper powder
  • 1/4 tbsp sugar
  • salt
  • 1-2 tbsp green chilly sauce


  1. Blend corn flour in a half cup of water.
  2. Heat oil in a saucepan , add garlic, ginger, roast for a while.
  3. Add onions and fry for a minute, now add chopped green chillies chopped, carrots,  cabbage and capsicum.
  4. Fry for 2-4 seconds , stir continuously.
  5. Add chicken & fry for a second or 2.
  6. Add white pepper/ black pepper, salt, , MSG ( optional ), soya sauce, chilly sauce , vinegar & mix well.
  7. Off the gas.
  8. On the other hand ,In a large non stick pan combine chicken stock & blended cornflour.
  9. bring to a boil by stirring continuously. Cook for 3-5 minutes
  10. Add all the ingredients mentioned under ” OTHER INGREDIENTS: , mix well . Adjust salt and other seasonings.
  11. When the boil comes,blend the egg in a small bowl separately add it slowly , little by little to the soup, stirring continuously. Cook for a minute &  add the stir fried vegetables .
  12. Garnish with spring onions (greens) and serve hot .


  • If you want to add some extra vegetables, you can add such as french beans, celery, mushrooms to give that extra flavour to your soup. you can try this recipe without using MSG as well.
  • I shall recommend not to add MSG salt as it is not good for health.
  • Increase or decrease the no of tbsp of soya sauce , chilly sauce and other sauces as per your preferences.
  • If you want to make veg Hot and sour soup , skip adding boiled chicken.
  • If you want to make veg hot and sour soup replace chicken stalk with vegetable stalk or  water.
  • Add vegetables just before serving , simmer for a minute. Serve hot.
  • If there is time in between preparing and serving. Best is prepare the chicken stalk with the sauces. On the other hand saute vegetables too. But do not mix it . Just few minutes before serving bring boil to the stock with sauces and cornflour. Add beaten egg little by little in soup, stirring continuously. Cook for a minute and add saute vegetables ( by this method the vegetables shall remain crunchy and will appear fresh and colorful). Serve hot.

PREPARATION TIME: 30- 40 minutes

SERVES: 4 persons.
